Overview
Aldactone is a prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat hypertension, heart failure, edema, and other conditions. Aldactone is sometimes prescribed off-label to treat hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) in women. Aldactone is also referred to by its drug name, spironolactone.

Aldactone is in a drug class called diuretics. Hormonal imbalance is believed to play a role in the development of HS in some women. In cases of HS, Aldactone may help by lowering the level of androgens, also known as male hormones.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Aldactone is generally taken one or more times daily.

Aldactone comes in tablet form.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Aldactone lists common side effects including headache, dizziness, skin rash, nausea, vomiting, gas, abdominal pain, and changes in the frequency of urination.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Aldactone include severe electrolyte imbalance.
