People with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can have children, but they may face some challenges. Here are some key points about pregnancy and HS:

- Increased Risk of Complications: People with HS may have a higher risk of pregnancy complications, such as miscarriage, preterm birth, stillbirth, gestational diabetes, and gestational hypertension.
- Infertility Concerns: Studies have shown that people with HS may have more difficulty becoming pregnant and are at greater risk of experiencing a miscarriage. Women with HS, particularly those between 36 and 45, may have a higher risk of infertility.
- Medication Adjustments: Certain HS treatments are not safe during pregnancy and may need to be adjusted. Medications like methotrexate, retinoids, and certain antibiotics (e.g., tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline) should be avoided.
- Planning Ahead: It's important to discuss family planning with your healthcare providers, including your dermatologist and OB-GYN, to optimize your ability to conceive and ensure a healthy pregnancy.
- Unexpected Pregnancies: If you become pregnant unexpectedly, contact your healthcare team immediately to adjust medications and ensure the best care for you and your baby.
