Diagnosis

A myHSteam Member asked a question 💭

Hello everyone, I’m curious to know what kind of doctor gave your diagnosis, how many doctors you had to go to, to get your diagnosis and how long from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis?

Tia!

I was diagnosed 4 years ago by my gynecologist. I have been suffering from this for 30 plus years. They always told me it was from shaving or because I was overweight or maybe I was dirty making me feel embarrassed and shaming me because it's had to be my fault. It was nice to finally find a doctor that knew what was going on and was able to explain it to me so I can get the right doctor and the right prescriptions and the right course of action to treat it.

Many people with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) have shared their experiences regarding diagnosis:

- Type of Doctor: It's not always a dermatology professional who first recognizes HS. Some people were diagnosed by their OB/GYN, and then had their diagnosis confirmed and treated by a dermatologist.
- Number of Doctors: It can take multiple visits to find a doctor who understands HS. Some people have had to see several doctors before getting a proper diagnosis.
- Time to Diagnosis: It can take up to seven years for a proper diagnosis, and even longer for people of color. One member mentioned being diagnosed at 38 or 39 years old after years of symptoms.

It's important to seek out a doctor experienced with HS and to be open and honest about your symptoms.
