What Kind Of Deodorants Do You Use? Do You Find That Using Deodorant Makes HS Flare-ups Worse?

A myHSteam Member asked a question 💭
San Antonio, TX

I have figured out over the years that I can only use deodorant that is at least 20% Aluminum. I know that it is bad for you, but it’s the only thing that keeps me dry. I’m currently using Dove Spray.

I realized a few months after being diagnosed with HS in 2016 to use spray deodorants- unscented is the best way to go- once in awhile I do a light scent but not often

I discovered that using a roll on or a stick, scented or not, cross contaminates and has a very high probability of causing new abscesses- HS under the arms, under the breasts and inner thigh and/or peritoneal area is the worst-

Hope this information is helpful to you-

Sincerely and passing on hugs-

Choosing the right deodorant for hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can be challenging. Here are some insights from my knowledge base:

Deodorant Recommendations for HS:
- Natural, Aluminum-Free Options:
- Native Deodorant
- Kiss My Face
- Pretty Frank

Ingredients to Avoid:
- Aluminum: Can cause allergic reactions and irritation.
- Parabens: Preservatives that may cause irritation and allergic rashes.
- Alcohols and Fragrances: Can trigger allergic reactions and irritation.
- Dyes: Often cause skin irritation.

Member Experiences:
- Positive Experiences:
- Arm & Hammer (aluminum-free)
- Mild deodorants with coconut oil and charcoal
- Arrid solid stick

- Negative Experiences:
- Some members find that any deodorant triggers flare-ups.
- New deodorants may work initially but cause severe flare-ups later.

Alternatives:
- Non-Deodorant Methods:
- Flushable wipes for underarm cleaning
- Avoiding deodorant entirely if it causes severe issues

Caution:
- Natural Ingredients: Even natural ingredients like baking soda and essential oils can be irritating for some.

It's important to find what works best for your skin through trial and error, and consider consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
