Does Surgery Help?

A myHSteam Member asked a question 💭

I’m going to probably need surgery to have the pockets cleared. The pain goes so deep like beyond my skin deep into the internal groin area. It’s spreading so I feel like, is there a chance surgery will make it worse, or is there a chance it won’t help at all?

And is it a red flag if the Derm always makes weird references to her age every time I see her?

Lying in hospital now recovering from surgery. Same area, groin buttocks. Stage “I’ll try anything”. Humira, antibiotics, Remicade, none worked. So surgery was the next option. Had a graft in ‘22. And the graft worked but it came back on the other cheek/groin.

Surgery can help some people with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), but it is not a cure. Here are some key points from the knowledge base:

- Positive Outcomes: Some myHSteam members report positive outcomes after surgery, such as reduced recurrence of lesions and improved quality of life.
- Challenges: Others experience the frustrating tenacity of HS, with lesions recurring after surgery.
- Preparation: Reducing inflammation and getting HS flares under control with medication before surgery can contribute to better surgical outcomes.
- Areas of the Body: No clear evidence shows that one part of the body responds better to surgery than another, but the underarm area (axillary HS) tends to have better outcomes due to less friction.

Always discuss your treatment options with your doctor to determine the best approach for your specific situation.

Surgery made it worse for me, just opened additional areas for tracts to develop. Antibiotics didnt do anything either. So far the most effective things have been low dose naltrexone from a compounding pharmacy and an elimination diet to determine which foods caused my flare ups. Nightshades turned out to be my main culprit but its different for everyone.
