The doctor probably meant idiopathic, which is a fancy way of saying no one knows exactly what causes it. Some people seem to have a genetic connection, some people have food triggers, some people have a hormonal connection, and some people have no clue why they developed HS.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory disease, and its exact cause is not fully understood. Here are some key points from the knowledge base:

- Inflammation and Blockages: HS occurs when hair follicles become blocked and inflamed. It is not caused by poor hygiene or deodorant use.
- Hormones: Hormones, particularly androgens, may affect HS by increasing the production of oily substances, leading to inflammation and clogged hair follicles. Hormone levels can influence HS flares, especially around menstrual periods, after childbirth, or during menopause.
- Genetic Factors: Up to 40% of people with HS have a relative with the condition, suggesting a genetic component.
- Environmental Factors: Smoking and obesity are risk factors that can worsen HS symptoms.
- Medications: Certain drugs, like lithium and some hormonal birth control types, may trigger or worsen HS in some individuals.

In summary, HS is likely caused by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors.

Nobody in my family had it except for me. I read it was either too much or not enough of some kind of protein in our blood. Doctors used to say it was from ingrown hairs and I've had sweat glands removed cause supposedly they have something to do with it too.Everybody has an answer, just no cure!
