I assume you are not in Canada?

I am not knowledgeable of any other health system outside of Alberta, however I would highly recommend if you can pay to see a specialist/ dermatologist they are the best route to go with a chronic skin condition. Go in having done your own research and hit them with ALL the questions no matter how hard it is. Then have them properly explain everything to you.
I am at the point in the game where I have my boyfriend do the kenalog injections into the flareups for me and I can do all rhe other care including: resorcinol cream daily, weekly injections of simlandi and daily dosage of aldactone orally. I anlso had some deroofing surgeries to rid of the large spots that wouldn’t go away. And it seems to be working if I can keep my stress down.

Sometimes it can be really challenging to find a trustworthy professional but that’s why it’s important that you question their every move and recommendation (I.e., why this treatment? What about this treatment, have you seen it in practice, does it work? What are the side effects? Cost? Frequency? Long term risks? Etc.) my dermatologist hated when I probed for answers but the only way to get anywhere is to keep asking until you get answers - coming from someone who works in healthcare - you are your best advocate 😊

Hope this kind of helped. Good luck!

1. Get Smart About HS:
- Being informed about HS can help you vet doctors and ask the right questions.

2. Seek a Specialist:
- Look for a board-certified physician who specializes in complex medical dermatology. These specialists often work at major hospitals and private practices and have expertise in treating difficult, rare, or complex skin diseases like HS.

3. Ask for Referrals:
- If your current dermatologist cannot provide a proper diagnosis or treatment, ask for a referral to a specialist.

4. Prepare for Your Visit:
- Write down all the points you’d like to discuss in advance.
- Share how HS has impacted you mentally and emotionally, not just physically.
- Ensure the doctor can explain the inflammation contributing to your HS.

5. Telehealth Options:
- Consider telehealth visits but check your insurer’s coverage first.

6. Support Groups:
- Engage with support groups to reduce isolation and gain recommendations for knowledgeable doctors.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of finding a doctor who understands and can effectively treat HS.
