Managing drainage with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) involves several strategies:

1. Control Overall HS:
- Treating the condition itself can reduce drainage. Medical treatments may include:
- Oral and topical antibiotics
- Steroid injections
- Oral contraceptives
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Biologic drugs
- Retinoids
- Hormonal therapy
- Surgical treatments in some cases

2. Bandaging:
- Use absorbent bandages to manage discharge and prevent skin irritation.
- Apply pressure with bandages to keep wounds from reexpanding.
- Consider using menstrual pads or nursing pads as cost-effective alternatives.

3. Hygiene:
- Wash wounds one to three times a day with saline solution.
- Keep the affected area uncovered as much as possible.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing when covering up.

4. Managing Smell:
- Use absorbent bandage material and seal it with something like Tegaderm to contain odors.

5. Creative Solutions:
- For groin area drainage, consider adult diapers or absorbent menstrual underwear.

By following these steps, you can effectively manage HS drainage and improve your comfort.

i order large boxes of abdominal pads from Amazon to help control mine because i have a lot of drainage on inner thighs. it's extremely helpful and i change them about 2 to 3 times a day depending on activity level of drainage.

I do the same thing. It depends on where it’s at for the drainage under my arm. I use the abdominal pad for the minimal drainage that’s coming from my leg. I use a gauze pad. I only have to change them twice a day. When the drainage is heavy, it’s more like three times a day.
