Second Surgery Or Packing In Wound

A myHSteam Member asked a question 💭

Hello everyone. I had excision surgery for an HS spot on my groin in March and it has continued to come back. Yesterday my doctor gave me two options: another surgery or packing in the wound. I’m not sure what the best course of action would be here. Anyone have similar experience?

When it comes to managing wounds after surgery for hidradenitis suppurativa, here are some key points from the knowledge base:

- Wound Care: Proper postoperative wound care is essential. This varies based on the type of procedure. For example, deroofing procedures heal from the bottom up and sides in, which can take weeks.
- Dressing Changes: The frequency of dressing changes depends on your healthcare provider's directions. Generally, it should be changed daily, every other day, or sooner if saturated.
- Special Wound Care: Extensive surgeries like wide excision may require special care, including multiple dressing changes per day.
- Postoperative Follow-Up: Essential to ensure proper healing and avoid complications. Your doctor will guide you on follow-up visits.
- Signs of Complications: Immediate medical help is needed for signs of infection, wounds opening up, or bleeding that won’t stop.

Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
