I have been referred to a dermatologist once and because I didn't want to take the antibiotic (i tried it for 6 months and it messed up my microflora and i had severe IBS). They discharged me after a 2 appointments. Really disappointing. Not sure if anyone has heard of hidrawear but I tried to get it prescribed as was rejected from a gp as it wasn't on my treatment plan from 2 years ago. I am fed up and the longer this condition goes on the worst it gets. Considering going private but can't… read more

Maybe try changing doctors? I tried going private for one appointment and their £250 advice was a referral to community dermatology. I've been waiting over a year and have just got an appointment in December. GP's don't understand the condition and have no idea how to treat it, you are entitled to another dermatology referral. Changing your doctors surgery may help with that

It sounds like you're facing some significant challenges with your hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) treatment. Here are some steps you can take to get your GP on board and improve your treatment plan:

1. Document Your Symptoms and Experiences:
- Write down all the points you’d like to discuss with your GP.
- Include how HS has impacted you mentally and emotionally, not just physically.

2. Ask Key Questions:
- During your appointment, ask your GP: "Can you help me understand the inflammation that's happening inside my body that may be contributing to my HS?"

3. Consider Telehealth Visits:
- If you can't find a local dermatologist, consider a virtual consult. Telehealth visits can be conducted via video chat, phone, email, or text.

4. Seek Specialist Clinics:
- The Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation provides a list of HS Specialty Clinics across the U.S. (you may want to check if there are similar resources in the UK).

5. Explore Clinical Trials:
- Clinical trials might offer new treatment options. Your dermatologist can coordinate with the research team to ensure compatibility with your current medications.

6. Engage with Support Groups:
- Join online support groups like myHSteam to connect with others who understand life with HS. Sharing experiences and advice can be very helpful.

7. Communicate Openly:
- Be honest with your GP about your previous experiences with antibiotics and your concerns about your current treatment plan.

8. Insurance and Coverage:
- Check your insurer’s coverage of telehealth visits to ensure you don’t fall outside of coverage guidelines.

By taking these steps, you can better advocate for yourself and work towards a more effective treatment plan for your HS.
